Janice's First Quilt

First: Kansas in January = Dreary pictures. Just saying'.

Janice got this fabric for Christmas last year and she finished the binding last weekend. The quilt has been done for quite a while, but we always had other things to do on the weekends they came home...until now. She did a terrific job with it. I forget what the fabrics are.

She finished the binding late on Sunday afternoon and I wanted a picture. Obviously, we weren't ready for this one. I think Baxter was running with a stick as big as he is and Jan was watching him. I have no clue as to what I was thinking!

However, if any of you have been wondering where I have been, look at what I am wearing and you can guess what I have been doing with some of my spare time. It obviously hasn't been sewing...or blogging. My poor blog has been sitting patiently waiting for new posts. My sons are working on a new web site for me, so I better get back to it!! I got a peek at Christmas, and I am so excited!!!

Oh, and to my sisters...I needed Johanna telling me to raise my side up a bit. Ha!

Springerle

These little anise flavored gems say Christmas to me. My Grandma Wenger always had them. Often, when I would drop in to visit, her kitchen aid mixer would be beating away. It was loud and went for such a long time (1/2 hour). I had her teach me how to make them and I am so glad I did. I remember her standing next to her frig on the pull-out cutting board, rolling out and pressing the dough. She made it look so easy. There haven't been many Christmases since then that I haven't made them...or attempted to make them!

Well, after Christmas we had a springerle making party to show the next generation how to make them. It was fun!

First, beat 4 eggs separate bowls (whites to a stiff froth and yolks creamy), then beat together with 2 c sugar. Beat it for 1/2 hour or so.

Baker's amonia (hartshorn) is not at our local grocery store. I used to get it at the pharmacy, but now I get it at Hearthside (a local specialty store). Last Christmas this jar was full. They tell me it evaporates....I think they are right. Break it up and powder it, if it is clumpy (is that a word???) and add 1 t then beat it for another 10-15 minutes.

All done.

I switch out my beaters and then add the flour with this baby (instead of a spoon). I am just careful to not over-work the flour. And I always add more flour than it calls for...I use extra large eggs.

No picture of the finished dough (sorry), but when it is finished, chill it. I got the dough to this point, then put it into the frig for a couple of hours. When the girls got there, we started working.

First, pull out a small ball of dough, depending upon the size of your springerle cookie press. Knead in a bit of flour, as needed, so dough is not sticky.

Roll the dough 1/4" (or a bit more) thick. Flour the mold.

I will also lightly dust the top of the rolled out dough with flour.

Knock the excess dough off the mold and press into the dough.

Cut the cookies apart and place them on a cookie sheet. I usually put a piece of parchment paper on the sheet first.

The dough is not that yellow. It was dark by the time we made the cookies.

Almost done.

This must have been a fun part, cause there are lots of pics of the cutting.

One more.

Once all the cookies are cut, put the cookie sheets in a cool room and let the tops dry for about 24 hours. If I let them dry a shorter amount of time, I have trouble with them loosing their shape. You can check them, periodically. When you pick them up, look at the bottom. There should be a dry outer rim and a center square that is still moist (it will be a darker color). This becomes the 'foot' that raises when you bake them. And I always bake one cookie just to be sure I have the time and temp correct. You want the bottoms to be golden.

These are great fresh, but even better when they have been in a tin for a couple of weeks. They don't get quite as hard as a biscotti, but close.

Here is the recipe as I got it from my grandma. I would love to know if any of you have made these or try my recipe. Enjoy!

4 eggs

2 c sugar

10-12 drops anise oil

1 lb. flour (more)

4 eggs beaten separate (egg whites to a stiff froth and yolks in a separate bowl), then beat together with 2 c sugar. Beat ½ hour or so, then add 1 t baking ammonia which has been powdered, then beat again 10-15 minutes. Add about 10-12 drops anise oil. Add 1 lb. flour (stir in with spoon). Chill several hours. Roll out about ¼” thick on floured board. Press with springerle mold that has been dipped in flour. Cut. Put on cookie sheet and let sit overnight or up to 24 hours to dry. Bake in slow oven, 250-275 for 25-30 minutes.

Fire Station Playhouse!

My favorite gift this year was one that wasn't even mine!!

The little man finally opened his fireman hat, so we took him to the study where Grammie helped him see the fire station playhouse.

That face...be still my heart!

The fireman has his ladder up the tree ready to climb up and get the kitty down. Someone needs to pick those apples and put them in the basket.

"I don't want to go back to Christmas!"

Later in the morning, the little man disappeared with Grammie's iPad and this is where we found him.

Several of us made trips into the playhouse with the little man during the day. Grandpa had a great flashlight that was a hit in there. What a joy! Sigh!

I got the pattern from Miss PrettyPretty on Etsy and purchased my felt here. It is from recycled material and came wrapped around a tube so it wasn't folded. I am already plotting another playhouse to stay at Grammie and Grandpa's house.

This bee block is for Staci in the Bee Unique Bee Knotty bee over on flickr. I opened the package with the fabric in it and when I saw the green I had to work on it immediately, even though she graced us with not having to do it until January.

This is going to be such a fun quilt. Staci asked that we not square it up. I chain pieced the strips she sent (heard she cut 700 of them!!!!!) and after cutting them to the size strips I wanted, there are three more strips leftover for another block.

Hanging Quilt for Elizabeth

Elizabeth from the BKBU bee asked for hanging quilts or folded quilts. Here is the sneaky peek I gave her earlier. (See the cute little bird??) She sent the Kona snow fabric and asked for a spring feel to the blook.

I love when the trees are just starting to bud in the spring. That inspired my pieced tree. The little quilt gave me fits, but I was having some problems with my machine, which I sorted out (thank goodness!!). My favorite part is the little blue bird in the tree. Everyone needs a blue bird in their tree in the spring!

This was a fun block to make for Corey in the Quilting Journey Round Robin Bee. It is going to be such a cheery quilt! I am really starting to love orange! :)

And this is a sneaky peek for Elizabeth in the Bee Unique Bee Knotty bee. She asked for hanging quilts, or quilts in chairs or over a fence. I am slow in finishing, but wanted her to see what I have going on so far. It will finish pretty quickly, but I have an idea or two still up my sleeve. Ha!

A total "Grammie" thing

Well, his daddy sent me the sweetest email, with the subject "Marvin". Feel free to read over my shoulder...

"just got Deacon up from his nap. He was curled up in a little ball on his tummy and smiled at me when I went in. I scooped him up and Marvin the monkey came with him. He had been cuddling with him.

Now Deacon and Marvin are watching Curious George. Marvin gets a hug every couple minutes."

If you were here, you would see my heart melting all over the floor. I have told my kids I could take 10 or 12 more of these (grandkids).

I think those numbers need to be higher.

My Sweet Girls!

I love my daughters! They were handpicked by some of my favorite people in the world, my sons. And I know ultimately they were picked by God. We had prayed for these lovely women since our sons were born...or approaching puberty!! LOL! But seriously, they are all a treasure to us!

Recently, the first son's wife and her cousin came to our little home and created a lovely dinner for ladies. They are cooking through the Pioneer Woman cookbook and call their little blog "Pioneer in a Year". It is a fun read. This picture if from the 5th installment of "The Sabetha Chronicles" on the meal at our home. Go check it out!

Our girl is on the right, but we claim her sweet cousin as family, too!! Thanks for a wonderful event, ladies, and for a fun blog!!

And this friendship star rocks! I was limited to the fabrics I received, and wanted the star just how it is, so chose to make the corners darker rather than the background to the stars. In a perfect world, I would have had something that would have played well with these, but alas I did not. I have seen her other offerings and she is going to have a beautiful quilt!

Now, go make some of those stars!

A Pinwheel First

Isn't that orange fabulous? And don't you just love that white on white windowpane?

12-white squares and 4-orange blocks...everything needed to make a cute little 8" pinwheel from quilters cache. I have never made one of these little blocks before, but it was so simple.

You sew four 4" squares together...

Then line up the template with the seams...

...and cut.

Works really well when you don't try to take shortcuts.... *sigh* I would have made another, but I used a charm pack and I didn't have anymore orange polka dots. And I had to have those orange polka dots.

I recently completed Terrie's block for the Quilting Journey Round Robin Bee over on Flickr. And today I got the pictures taken. Finally.

She wanted a star block based on a memory from our childhood. One of my grandmothers loved owls. She had a macrame owl hanging under her clock in her kitchen. And thinking of that brings back a flood of other wonderful memories from my childhood. Thank you, Terrie!

Fabric Rocks!

It is what captured my attention and made me dive head-long into quilting. This wonderful modern fabric is the reason I sew and therefore, the reason I began "My Full Color Life". I can't believe the fun I have had with this little blog. Now, it is definitely time to celebrate with you!!

From Little Things...Progress

In my last post, I shared my fabrics and pattern for the Quilting Book Club assignment. Well, I found my tree trunk fabric.

This purple shot cotton is perfect. It plays well with the other fabrics and has purples, reds and pinks within it. Black fabric was too strident for me and all the browns I tried didn't work.

I really love this tree trunk. It is stylisticly appropriate with the pictorial, playful pattern and fabrics. (Yes, I used a permanent marker to draw around my pattern)

I spent several hours cutting, double checking and carefully labeling. I had to figure out the pattern and the fabrics for each section and didn't want to make a mistake!!

I am still working on those pesky 124 diamonds.

My fabric choice - Quilting Book Club assignment

I know I showed you these fun fabrics in my last post, but I didn't show you what I was going to make with them.

I love all things pictorial and geometric. And when you throw in 'whimsy' and fabulous color, I am a happy girl. This project is going to be incredibly ambitious to get done in 6 weeks. Especially with evening musical rehearsals beginning, but it is what I want to do. This project is not from a book, it is online with the Lecien company and is free. I do have Sarah's new book and have several things I want to make, but this pattern meets the assignment criteria of the assignment. It is me.

The weather is fabulous. Our back deck is an amazing place to sit, especially now, with the lovely temperatures we have been enjoying. The water is singing in our gurgling pot. The hummingbirds are giving us quite a show at the feeder. Did you know hummingbirds make sounds other than their wings humming?? For some reason I didn't remember that. Back to the perfect day. I got to sleep in...longer than I remember doing in a long, long time. My husband then made an amazing brunch and lattes, which we ate out on the back deck. I can hear the cicadas calling for fall and a woodpecker working off in the distance. There is virtually no wind, which is a miracle for Kansas!

And I finally got to sew last night!!!!!

That was wonderful enough, but I also have 100 followers on my little blog! 100!! Wow. I cannot even tell you how fun that is for me.

Now, I have known this little tidbit of news for awhile...and it needs to be celebrated!! So....there is going to be a giveaway!! I want it to be fun. Got any ideas??? I have some, but I would so love to hear yours, as well. What would be fun for you?

OK. Here's what I did last night:

Debbie, from our Bee Unique...Bee Knotty flickr bee, sent the lovely grey fabric and asked for a wild prints to make a star for her. This was the first block made on my new machine. Boy, did I ever use the seam ripper a ton!!! Don't know if it was the new machine or the fact that I have not sewn for longer than I care to admit! Do not want to repeat that (the high use of the seam ripper AND the long absence from 'really' sewing)!!!!

I chose to do a window pane block for Nancy for her month, also in the BUBK bee. If you click over to the pattern and decide to make one for yourself, be sure to check out the measurement on that bottom center piece. It is an inch too short (*see "seam ripper" above). I do not have a lot of Christmas fabric, and this pattern worked really well. She sent the red snowflake fabric. (You can see the open pattern of our dining table on the back deck with the sun coming through it.)

These are fabrics from Sarah Fielke's "From Little Things" line. They are part of an assignment from "The Quilting Book Club". We are often studying others to find out their likes in order to make something they love. Well, our task this time was to pick out a published pattern that we 'love', gather fabrics that are 'utterly us' and have it done in 6 weeks time. These are the fabrics I chose. I have 'accepted the fact' that I love all things that are sophisticatedly pictorial (not 'cute-sy' or sweet), geometric and full of color. I so want to be a 'grown up' in my quilting tastes. I enjoy, appreciate and purchase all different kinds of fabrics. But these are 'me', and that was the assignment. I love these representative birds and foliage and the variety of colors they come in. Although, I am not 'utterly' in love with the color range (I would be if they were jewel tones), they are still completely fabulous!

Trucks and Tractors finish!

It is so much fun when your handmade gifts are appreciated! Especially when the recipient is two!!

Deacon saw this quilt, and did the big, round "oh...." and talked about getting cozy with it.

Oh...and he said he was excited. (Of course, the 'could' have been about the tricycle he also got, but I don't think so!)

Then he wanted to make a tunnel.

How rewarding!

This has been completed for quite some time, but had to wait until his birthday to post this, even though his mom and dad have seen it "in progress".

I was inspired by this scrappy tiling tutorial on a another blog I enjoy. It was so fun to make.

I find that I really enjoy the pictorial aspect of appliqué. Back in my 'other' crafting life, I was a weaver. I will have to show you some of my pictorial work from there sometime....

I would love to hear what inspires you!!

My little hexie nest

Unexpectedly spent a week with my MIL while she was in the hospital. She is now home (thank God) and I now know how to make hexies. Not crazy about the fabric--need something brighter--but this worked in a pinch!

This is the other part of my 'hexie nest'. I haven't worked on those hexies much till traveling to visit kiddos this weekend. The past two weeks my 'real life job' has been consuming my time. Don't believe me? Ask my hubby.

Bucket Hat Fun!

I saw this adorable hat in a blog I frequent and wanted one for my little guy!! I *heart* this fabric!!

So I bought this Bucket Hat pattern and made it for the little man. He was between two measurements, so I went with the bigger one. Isn't that tiny gingham adorable?

I have to learn how to adjust patterns!! It is a bit too big. Boo! Oh well, he will grow into it and it was really fun to make! Doncha know, it is all good!! (Did you hear the MinnesOta twang in the 'doncha know'? A couple of my choir girls spent a week at a camp in MinnesOta and were 'doncha know'ing us all through choir retreat. It stuck!)

Got to see my aunt. (Hi Joyce!) It was a nice surprise. In visiting with her, I found out she is quilting, as well, and we know some of the same quilt shops!! Kind of like having mutual friends...

It made me remember that I wanted to share my sweet bird quilt made by the gals from the Bee Unique Bee Knotty bee over on flickr. It has been a work in progress for quite some time, but time is what was needed to get it just perfect. And no, it is not finished yet!! Colorado called and we answered!

Got to bike ride with this guy and my kids.

And do a little bit of this (with that guy up there and my kids - Too bad the wind was not cooperating that day).

We got to look at this view.

And I got to spend some time with all the fam, and this little guy.

It was delightful.

But, before I left, I got to sash all the blocks in that wonderful pinky red fabric that photographs fluorescent, even though it isn't.

Then border them in black.

I did strip piecing.

Press (not iron) the heck out of them.

Put the rows together.

And finish all but the border.

I love flying geese (a story for another post!), so I decided to trial a flying geese border, since the plain fabric border (that would have been easy to do) looked blah. I found this web site that had a formula for fast flying geese that finish at 2"x 4", made a few and hung 'em on the design wall till the girls could see them and tell me what they thought. I really didn't need them to, cause they were perfect! So, I cut and marked my squares....

...and went to town.

I sewed and sewed.

Amazingly, I have enough left over to have some geese flying on the back of the quilt, too.

Strip piecing them was fun...really and truly!!!

My machine needed some TLC in the midst of it all.

I fussy cut some corner pieces.

Laid it all out on the tables....and ran out of time!

See it waiting patiently for my return?

Now...how in the world should I quilt it????

Here is a progress picture of the BUBK quilt. I added the Oliver+S frothy pink fabric around each block and then sized them all the same. The black with white dots AH June bug fabric was then sashed between all the blocks. It hung on the design wall for quite some time. My sisters helped me. We auditioned the plain larkspur, the pink frothy and the black dots. Also tried the turquoise and the green I sent out to the bee gals. They were all just so-so.

Next post I will show you what I did, cause right now I am on vacation!!! :)

I've got soul....blossoms

...and a lot of unfinished projects. So, why am I showing you new yummy fabrics that probably won't get put together (except in ziplock baggies) for quite some time instead of all the progress I have made on this quilt?

Well, I am really close to being done. I have had to think about each step, because I want it as close to perfect as it can be. I don't want to say, "I wish I had ______" about any part of the quilt. And by waiting, hopefully I will make up for the day I had 3 (yes 3!) separate blog posts asking for your input. (Thank you, by the way)

So, for all you concrete-sequential people, I am sorry. But for all my fellow abstract-randoms, here goes!

My sister's helped me group these fabrics and lay them out in rows. Lesha was helping me know which photo was the far left one so I wouldn't forget when I make this quilt next February...or she was telling me I am a loser...

So, here are the photos, in order, that I will use as reference when I get to cutting. These are rows 1 and 2. Each row has 3 different fabrics.

My sister, Marcie, made a gorgeous quilt from a Kaffe Fassett book (can't remember which) that I am styling this quilt after. Here are rows 3 and 4 (with a little peek of row 2 - so I can remember). Once she gets her blog up and running and posts about it, I will share with you.

(Did I mention it was gorgeous?? OK. Good)

Her blocks were a 6" center, but I am going to go 8". I want to show off as much of these gorgeous prints as possible. Here's part of row 4, row 5 and the start of row 6. You get the idea.

Each block will have the large square with a smaller rectangle and a square on the left or right side of the square.

On one block the square will be on top of the rectangle, and on the next block (same colorway, same row) the square will be below the rectangle.

It will be pretty straight forward, but I will need to *keep track of where I am in the row.

With the fabric I have, I will be able to do 9 blocks for each row. It should finish as a generous king size quilt.

I will always remember the fun...and confusion...we had putting it together. It was funny how all 3 of us girls were all looking at it from our own unique perspective, saying the same thing, but it came out totally opposite. Each one of us had the top in a different place!! If you were listening in, you could tell we are sisters!

I love sewing with those girls, who are, of course, ladies. But to me, they will always be the girls. :)

I love a good book

The first day in their new home, Deacon climbed up into the rocker in his room. He spent a long time just sitting and reading. He loves his books. {This photo taken with iPhone and edited with Instagram app. Really fun!}

It is fun to see D's Chocolate Love hanging over the back of that rocker. He also likes to read books 'under' it as well, because sometimes it doubles as a tent over the end of his crib.

Isn't it fun seeing things you've made loved and used???

p.s. I added the photo of Deacon in the chair to The Pioneer Woman phone photography assignment page. There are some cute ones over there.

Missing my Mojo

I have the pink/red border added and then was going to trim all blocks to 14", but I kept making silly mistakes. I did not cut myself and I did not cut any of the blocks, but that rotary cutter kept slipping or I cut them the wrong width. So, after my third major error, my sister made me quite and wait until later. Whew! I am glad she did!!

Do you ever run into problems like this?

Some Fussy Cut Love for Terrie

OK. I know my photography skills leave something to be desired. I also know that taking pictures at night is a 'no-no', but goodness, it is hard to wait!!! Especially as I wanted to get these in the mail before I left town. Terrie is our bee mama for The Fussy Cut Love Bee and her month was the last for this group. She sent out this cute pixie fabric and asked for them to be 'peeking out' from our block.

I was able to do 2 blocks for her, because her size was between 6.5" and 12.5" unfinished. I love making these pieced frames!

What am I doing?

I am staying with my son and his family while taking a class on teaching and assessing sight singing in the choral classroom, (Sound like fun?? It does to me, which is why I am here!!). But, before heading down there, my sweetheart did another triathlon. Here he is setting up his transition area. (I can't believe I even know what that means!!!)

Here's his group starting to move toward the lake for the start.

Now I am staying with this little guy, who is more interested in watching the early morning lawnmower than me.

They currently live in a town home, but their family is moving to a new home at the end of the week. His mom and dad are feeding me some pretty terrific meals. This contains some lovely mexican spice rubbed chicken from the charcoal rotisserie, fresh cilantro and guacamole delicious-ness, all in a flour tortilla!

And I did cut out one set of my sashing strips for these blocks the morning of my first class. No time to do more until the class is over. This teacher is giving us homework!!! Doesn't he know it's summer??? ha!

And, my sister is actually the one who got me started on these birds. She is using it with some bright batiks to make a throw quilt for her MIL. I really like how these look, too!!!

The photo may not do it justice, but in person the red is so much less harsh than the black. It needed to be a much narrower border (1" or less) and then the black frame on the outside edge really sets it off. The black will be no larger than 1.5". We tried the blocks without the sashing, but my sisters liked it this way much better, and I agree. You can see the details of the blocks, this way. In person, the red/pink border is so much calmer and allows the eye to flow from block to block. The black didn't. We realized that when we tried the red one more time with the narrower frame (thank you, Terrie!!!) Adding the black border provides a stop, and it needs to be fairly thin. However, looking at the picture, I am definitely going to try it without the black once the top is pieced.

This will be part of the backing. The rest will be pieced.

Sashing trial

First, thanks for all your great comments, both here and on flickr, to help me with ideas for putting these blocks together. I am a total newbie when it comes to doing this, and I love these blocks so much, I don't want to just hurry and put it together. Your ideas have been invaluable in helping me think in different ways!! So...tell me what you think of this...

I added Alexander Henry's tiny dots in black for the sashing. This is a 2.5" strip to finish at 2". But, I think it is a bit too wide and overpowers the blocks. I used the frothy pink Oliver + S fabric in the corner pieces. I am thinking about only putting them on the inner corners and leaving the outer black frame solid. Or maybe the corner pieces are too much???

But now I am going back to liking the pic with no sashing...it did have great movement...perhaps using these fabrics for some sort of an outer border...hmmm. I am going to try narrowing that black first.

Help. How do I put this wonderful top together? Here are all the blocks I have received from my bee friends.

Here are all the blocks with the new Oliver + S modern workshop fabric, Frothy Pink Textile Wave, used as sashing.

I could also add a narrow border of this fabric around each block and then sash the quilt with the AH fabric that matches the bird fabric.

This tree is for Jen in the Bee Unique Bee Knotty bee on flickr. She sent out the white background fabric and the bark fabric then asked us to create a tree using favorite fabrics or colors. I am really liking red and pinks together, as well as turquoise and all kinds of greens.

This block is for Kerry in our Quilting Journey Round Robin Bee. This is actually foundation pieced on a square of interfacing. Worked well! I fussy cut the center square and then started adding more of my current favorite colors. She said she liked brights. I am so glad!

Here is my block with Kerry's starter block. I didn't take the time to photograph all of them together {School in May, son graduating, 7 family birthdays}, but it is going to be a wonderful quilt!!!

This block is for Deanna in the Fussy Cut Love Bee. I love that hummingbird. And those colors!! This is going to be a gorgeous quilt!! Working on it reminded me of the summer at the cabin in Colorado that I patiently sat with my finger perched under the hummingbird feeder until the birds got used to me. I still remember how their little feet felt! Such tiny, beautiful birds!

A Bird in the Hand (or 15 of them!!!)

I joined a new bee over on flickr. I know. I know. But I couldn't resist!! It was going to be more of a challenge bee and I was excited to see if I could meet that challenge. I have already had a blast and it only promises to get better!! I volunteered to go first and tossed around different ideas for my blocks.

My sister was using this Alexander Henry Larkspur bright bird fabric for a quilt for her MIL, and I love it. Surprise, I know. Me, liking birds in fabric??? Hmmmm....

Don't they just scream spring??? Back in late March, when I was planning this, spring was really lagging. And all the colors in the fabrics are favorites of mine. They are so fun just to look at, so that choice became simple.

My directions?? An asymmetrical block with part fussy cut bird and part traditional block. Here is my take on the challenge.

OK. I couldn't miss out on the fun that is going to be happening over at Amy's Creative Side. So...I'm jumping on board and participating!!

I chose this mini quilt as my favorite quilt I have ever made!!

Why is it my favorite? Because I created this for a special little guy that I am simply crazy about, my grandson, Deacon (featured in this post and this one). And it was so, so, so much fun to make it for him!

This little quilt combines so many things I love...raw edge applique, free motion stitching and free motion quilting, as well as the whole creative aspect of coming up with my own "quilty" story.

I was inspired after seeing this darling little girl quilt tutorial and then trying it for myself. I started thinking about little boys, things they would do and ways they play. And what is a boy without a dog...

And that little boy??? He has to be flying a kite, of course!!!

I love how the dog is chasing the kite tail. Reminds me of our dear chocolate lab Zoey. I can still see her jumping into the air for the frisbee. I am sure she would chase this kite's tail if she could!!!

The pieced background was fun, fun, fun!! I chose greens for the lower part and blues for the sky. Even now it is fun to remember those fabrics and other ways I have used them.

And did you notice that pebble quilting around the outside edge?? That was a first and so much fun!!! I love my new machine!!! So much so, that I got this quilt back from Deacon's bedroom

And added in some fun free motion swirls!!!

I can't wait till school is out so that I can do more of this!!!

But I know I am gonna love this quilt more than any other, because my sisters each helped me make it, plus all of the fun memories of sewing them together. :)

Am I bird obsessed and should I be worried?

We came to visit my dear Mom-in-law today and I brought my three most current projects with me. I realized, they all feature birds. I know I thoroughly enjoy watching them. I love the migratory geese and hummingbirds and when the robins return in the spring. I love hearing the cardinals sing, the jays fight and the pair of morning doves that live in our backyard.

I will just show you one of those projects, today. I have spent some time working out of this basket of Tula Pink's fabric...

....and using the fussy cut birds and eggs in nests to add pieced frames.

This is a very fun technique I learned from LuluBloom.

As a matter of fact, I flickr mailed her to see if she minded me posting about this, since I sort-of, totally, completely copied her idea.

It has been awhile since I worked on them....

But at the time, I was on a roll.

I love the warm/cool color combinations.

The colors are rich and vibrant.

Just what I love!

Here are the next blocks in Sarah and Molly's Free Piecing Study that my sisters and I are doing together. I couldn't resist dipping into those sweet Sherbet Pips in the making of the houses for my sisters and me. I love those little scooters and the dogs.

My quilt will have the green background. One of my sisters will have the gold background...

Free Piecing Mondo Birds

I am delighted to share the final quilt in this yummy stack!

"Hexie Tiles" is actually the first one of the group that I made, originally blogged here. So, this quilt....

...became this one!! I squared it up and added a border.

The back is all one fabric, which is a nice contrast to the front.

Don't you love how quilts look so cozy and crinkly after they are laundered??

I said I would never make another hexagon quilt, but it has been long enough that I have changed my mind.

Yup. I am no longer saying "never"!!

Blue Brick Path

This is the quilt I made for our newest daughter, Lynelle. A newlywed. Married to our son. Our family now feels complete.

It is part of the stack of 'girl' quilts I made. I already blogged about this one.

The fabric is by Pillow and Maxfield and the pattern is my adaptation of Amy Butler's Lotus Brick Path.

The backing is my favorite fabric in the grouping that I picked out.

Isn't that a simple, yet gorgeous combination of two blues?

Ashley (married to my oldest and mama to my grandson) took these close ups for me. I will be sharing the quilt I made for her in another post. {It is the last one in that beautiful stack of 'girl' quilts}

She did a great job of capturing this quilt.

It was so satisfying and almost calming to work with these blues and greens. Do you find certain colors affect you in different ways when you work with them?

My other girl, Janice, wanted to make her quilt. I was tickled pink!! I don't know exactly how she feels about sewing, but it was rewarding to help her and watch her work on her quilt top. It will probably be summer before she can get back to finish it.

I have prayed for these daughters since my boys were little and God came through in a big way! Of course, He always does, if we just 'see' it!

I am not a seasoned quilter, but I can't say I am a newbie anymore, although I still don't have a quilt of my own...yet. But that is a story for another day!

I recently had an 'Ah-ha' moment. Something must have happened in junior high home ec class that held me back from even considering sewing. Something other than my teacher who always said, "Keep it down to a dull roar, girls".

I didn't want to have to use the dreaded seam ripper. Now that seems so funny. But once I fell in love with these new fabrics, I had to start sewing, seam ripper or not.

Now look what has happened. I have had so much fun from such a wonderful hobby. And I have had the joy of making things for people I love. Why did I never consider that my sons might enjoy a quilt I made for them?

That quilt up there is the one T ended up with and this one is D's.

Here is G's quilt.

I didn't know which quilt would go to which boy, because I just wrapped them and put them under the tree with no names. They got 'pot luck'.

Isn't it amazing what can happen when we get past our fears, even if they are something as silly and small as a seam ripper!

There is so much inspiration and tons of wonderful ideas on flickr. I am happy to be a part of the fun. It is always a good day to 'play', especially when it is so white outside and you love color! So...

Traditional: Flying Geese

My traditional block is made with Amy Butler's love fabric, which is significant for me as I began quilting a few years ago because I saw her fabric in a quilt. It was a "this is not your grandma's pastime" moment and I knew I wanted to work with all that wonderfully colorful and delightfully designed fabric! I don't know why flying geese have intrigued me, with their points to meet, but they have. I especially like that the dark geese in this block are actually two different fabrics in similar colors that have been pieced. I made this block for The Quilting Journey Round Robin Bee's quiltalong, so I get to keep it.

Modern: Pinwheel in a Star

My modern block also comes from The Quilting Journey Round Robin Bee. The pattern is from Hanies and is now living with Melissa who requested pinwheel blocks. The colors of her starter block were fresh and bright, so this block was really fun to make. I love that white inner border that breaks up the star!

Creative: Cindy's Park Applique

I made this applique park for a quilt that is going to be a neighborhood, also from The Quilting Journey Round Robin Bee. Cindy requested anything that would be found in a neighborhood and sent a modern house block as her starter block. By the time I received the group of blocks, there were several houses, a dog house and some people, so I thought about adding a place for those dogs to take a walk, thus the park was 'born'. I don't know where that bird came from. He just showed up one day, so I let him stay.

Bee Block Busy-ness Business

February is my month in "The Fussy Cut Love Bee". We run from the 15th to the 15th and I have been packaging up fabric. Since Valentine's Day is soon, I am calling my quilt "Starling Love" {really it is because I love this fabric}. Each member will get 2 packages.

More fabric stacks ready to be packaged up.

Most of the bees over on flickr take December off {thankfully!!!} so the following blocks have been done in January and February.

These blocks are going to be part of a Bento Box for "Sew Bee It". Messygoat sent precut fabrics that have been in her stash for a l-o-n-g time. It is going to be bold and wild. Can't wait to see how she cuts and re-assembles the blocks.

Also for "Sew Bee It" - MeredithQuilts asked for action words on an 8x11 background with a 2.5" border, making a finished 12x15 block.

After I finished the "Hope" block, I saw that I was going to have enough fabric to do "Give" {the other word I chose}. I am not sure the"G" looks right, but it is what it is! I didn't have enough fabric to finish the border.

These fun gifts came from Lisa - "A Quilting Journey Round Robin Bee". I received them for winning our Holiday game 4!! Thanks, Lisa!!

For "The Fussy Cut Love Bee", J.Amundsen sent out precuts and I just sewed them together - easy peasy. I love the red and grey of this line!

Rocket Dog Revisited

I loved making this quilt for Deacon. It has been hanging above his bed in his room. But it was never quite finished. The original pattern was actually for a pillow and had this wonderful free motion quilting on the background. I tried and tried to get my 1960's Singer to do it when I originally made this wall hanging, but either she couldn't or I couldn't figure it out.

Well, I got a new machine for Christmas, so I asked for Rocket Dog to come back and visit for awhile.

Yesterday I finally got the nerve to try those intriguing free motion swirls.

It was actually easy and fun. I am amazed by the differences in sewing machines.

Rocket Dog gets to go home and I am now satisfied that he is truly finished. Ahhhh....

LOVE and {Sew Bee It}

I sent Amy Butler "Love" fabric to my bee pals in The Sew Bee It bee over on flickr {along with some other fabrics}. I asked for flying geese and this gorgeous quilt is the result!

It is the perfect size for covering up in a comfy chair.

My dear daughter, Ashley, took the photos for me. Go visit her brand new blog, especially if you are a foodie or a fan of PW!

I absolutely *LOVE* how this quilt turned out.

Those quilters did a great job of giving me variety and charm so that I could, in turn, share with my dear mom-in-law.

And that backing fabric...sigh...

...really does my heart good, especially when everything is so white outside!

Daylight is better

All the photography buffs in my fam tell me I need natural light for a good pic, {and some more lessons...Gavin!} Well, they are obviously correct, but this was the beginning of a snow day...and I mean the very beginning! There wasn't much natural light at the moment and I had quilt bindings to sew. {see here} Plus, who wants to sleep away a good snow day? Anyway, I have had some interest in this early morning picture of my teacup.

My sister gave it to me for Christmas. She actually gave me two. The other one is green. I take turns using them. They came from Anthropologie. I know, because I went gaga over them right before she bought them for me for Christmas {which I totally and completely missed, because she is "The Queen of Sneak"}.

I absolutely love to drink coffee and tea out of beautiful cups, and this is a beautiful cup! {Can you smell green Moroccan Mint???}

Snow Day WIP

Early morning snow day sustenance. I have already had my coffee, which is my early morning necessity! Isn't that teacup pretty?! It was a Christmas gift from my sis!

Nothing like a good snow day to turn this...

Here is a sneak peak of the backs of the 5 quilts I finished yesterday (I had finished one early in the week).

They are all now nice and crinkly. I used the color catcher sheets when I washed them. Worked perfectly. It was late when they were done, so no pictures yet....lots of happiness, but no pictures.

Magoo becomes Marvin

They say it is better to give than to receive. They are right! :)

Inbox Fun was where I shared what I won from Crystal of Two Little Aussie Birds. I was thrilled to receive that cute little monkey pattern to make for Deacon.

As fall came, and the crazy-ness that is my life was whirling around me, I wasn't sure if this would be the Christmas Magoo would be born. However, one weekend...

I was rewarded beyond words, when early on Christmas morn, Deacon and Grammy V snuck out to meet his new monkey sitting by his stocking. (Shhhhh.....please don't tell on us!)

The first thing he did was give it a kiss on that big smiling mouth.

The second thing he did was give it a hug. And he held on to that hug for a long time while those cute little boy fingers patted away. My heart melted all over the place.

Deacon and his mommy and daddy have renamed Magoo, Marvin.

I had so much fun making this for Emerson, that I had to find a way to adapt it for my grandson, Deacon. I thought about things a boy would do and came up with this.

I thought about it, and happened to have in my possession a block made by my friend Krista with a kite on it. Oh yeah! And what is a boy without a dog? If there is a boy, there has to be a dog.

As the old year ends and the new one begins, I can finally begin to show you some of the things I made for Christmas gifts. I love my sewing machine. More than I ever thought I would. But, I was never able to accomplish free motion quilting. Not that I want to do it on a grand scale (yet). So....

Look at what I got as an early Christmas present!! She is a grand machine. Simple, yet able to do more than I could before.

The first thing I made using this machine was this darling quilt following the tutorial on comfortstitching found here. (Notice the bubble free motion quilting stitch!!! That was a piece of cake with my new baby!!!)

Aneela gave such excellent instructions, it was easy and soooo much fun to do!! I love seeing all those favorite fabric scraps being put to good use!

This little darling went to my great niece, Emerson Kate, on Christmas afternoon. (Her mommy does the cutest baby gifts and hair bows here. You can see a picture of that beautiful little girl on her blog header.)

I love how the little girl turned out. And did you notice that cute little bumble bee under the branch of the tree?? Fabric designers are brilliant people. I'm just sayin'...

And I love that big flower on her dress with the other flower that became her collar!! Sooooo much fun!

Wait till you see how I adapted this pattern for my sweet little grandson, Deacon!!!!!!

QJRR Bee block for Victoria

Another fun block to make. Victoria said we could put something in the center of the block if we would like. I like. I thought about it for quite a while before I settled on this.

Here are our blocks together. This is going to be an adorable quilt! (Sorry the color is a bit distorted--it was dreary outside)

I loved sifting through my fabrics and finding fun bits and pieces to add to the quilt. And I couldn't resist the "V".

I found a font I liked, and enlarged it on my computer screen and simply traced it from there onto my steam a seam.

I hand stitched the raw edge applique initial, mainly because my sewing machine chose that time to quit working properly. I hope she likes it as much as I do.

My husband's Grandma Angell's Pecan Pie

We made this scrumptious pie on Thanksgiving day at my mom-in-law's home. We did it on a whim and had a blast figuring everything out (including oven temp, baking time, oh....and butter the size of walnut). Of course, with the internet, that was pretty simple.

Recipe:

1 c dark Karo
3/4 c sugar
butter: size of walnut

Boil all of the above to thread. Cool.

2 heaping tsp flour
1/4 t nutmeg
2 eggs
1/2 c milk
2 t vanilla
1 c pecans

Mix together. 10" pan

Something else I spent time doing over Thanksgiving break.

Back on track

I brought my sewing machine home.

I miss having it up where my sisters also sew and my folks can just drop in anytime, but I have been in the thick of musical rehearsals and gone on the weekends. So I brought it home. It is really kind of fun to sew at 9:00 at night or 6:00 in the morning! :)

However, this weekend I have been HOME!!! And I am fighting a cold, that is being shared around the cast (we are a week out), so sewing has been about all I have felt like doing!! That and watching movies...old movies or new movies on the Hallmark channel, it doesn't really matter (I love John Wayne)! But I have been productive, and that does feel good!

This first block I did is for Jen in our Quilting Journey Round Robin Bee. My inspiration block was the Antique Tile from Modify Tradition. I just added another strip of fabric to bring it up to 15.5", which is what she requested.

These bad boys are really big and the light in my room is not great, so they kind of hang off the table, but here is my block with Jen's starter block. They will be living happily in Canada.

Next comes the block for Krista. It was so hard to decide which way to go with this block, because I had an idea of what I was going to do from the pictures I had seen of others and what they had done, until I had hers and the others in my hot little hands! Then, I knew I had to rethink...and wait until I was actually "in" a fabric store to get some different fabrics. I decided on 3 fabrics and a star. Without even knowing it, I even ended up purchasing the same KF fabric she had in her block to use in mine. And the blue matches hers, as well...two *happy accidents*.

The pattern for my block came from the Quilter's Cache website (a real treasure). Here are our blocks together.

The last block I did was for Mona W. This block and Jen's came together about 2 weeks ago. I thought I might not enjoy doing this block, because I love variety and Mona wanted a paintbox block (one color) ala "Oh, Fransson", one of my favorite blogs. I was so wrong. I love red and this block was so...satisfying to make. :)

Here is my block with Mona's. :) It is fun to think of them living together in Germany!!

And, last but not least, I did a block for Wendy for November, in my Sew Bee It quilting bee. She rescued some 1930's reproduction fabrics from a friend who had them in a tub labeled "Aunt Grace". I received some pieces of fabric already cut into squares and strips as well as some other pieces of fabric. Wendy asked for 9" blocks, and since I had just finished the paintbox block, I did these in the same manner and style.

I am really into owls right now. I made these fabric postcards for an exchange I signed up for late in the summer before school and musical rehearsals got into full swing and I was still in the blissful forgetfulness of what my life is like in the fall!! Fortunately, they were pretty easy to make.

I enjoy applique and have a pattern program from Sue Spargo, which is where these little darlings came from. I enjoy her pictorial style. She also has a great blog, full of fun pics!

It is applique and mostly Anna Maria Horner fabric, though the tree top is from Amy Schimler's Animal Party, the tree trunk is Laura Gunn's Lantern Bloom and the top grass line is Heather Bailey's Hop Dot. Now I just need to finish the outline stitching...It is gonna be hard to send this one away!!!!

Yup. I'm back! And I love how this quilt top turned out. I followed Julie's initial directions over at her Hexagon Quilt Along. Ashley picked out the fabric. Wish you could see it in person. The fabrics are really gorgeous! It is not quite big enough, so I am going to trim those two sides so they are straight and add a border.

I know this is a simple pattern...and mostly all from the same designer {Anna Maria Horner}...but when I see this quilt in person, I just feel good.

Color does that for me.

And these blues are amazing.

Just look at that deep pink that almost reads red. {I love those 'fans'}. There is not much about this quilt that I don't like.

Tessophia is making a quilt for her six year old daughter. She asked for 12.5 square, 12.5 x 6.5 or 6.5 square blocks. My picture does not do this fabric justice. My top block is 12.5 x 6 and the bottom 2 are 6.5 square. This will be a sweet quilt, perfect for a little princess.

Wedding Gift

I got excited. I sent this quilt on to it's final home last year cause I was so excited to see it get to my niece and her husband. And it was late. Of course, I have heard the old adage that a wedding gift is not late if the couple receives it in the first year of their marriage. I think that saying was made up by a creative person who struggles with organization. It doesn't matter. I claimed it for this one. Anyway, I got Mrs. S to send me some more pictures of it.

I love my longarm quilter. She does beautiful work. But I want to learn to 'do it myself'. We'll see how that goes.

I just love this fabric. There is something so satisfying about blue. It makes me feel comfortable and happy. Kind of like driving under the vast Kansas sky on a bright summer afternoon. We are tootling down the highway, the ground is flat and there is nothing but sky in all directions (and of course all the other cars enjoying the view!). I love it!

...and try new things. So, I joined an online exchange and I made a fabric postcard. Yes, I did. It was a first and I learned a lot. It turned out cute, even with everything I did wrong. :) Of course, I am not going to tell you everything I did wrong. I love that cute 'tree' fabric...and the owl stamp...and the fact that Lisa now has it!!!

The Quilting Journal Round Robin Bee that I am in, has a quiltalong on the side. We call it the Secret Society of the Traveling Bee. It isn't really a secret. :) Many of us are fairly new at piecing quilts or wanting to try out some fun blocks that seem difficult or scary. I shared the July block here, but realized I had never shown you my June block. I love those flying geese. I pieced two long strips of coordinating fabric from the Amy Butler Love line, and then cut out my geese. My eye is drawn to those polka dots. They make me feel happy just looking at them.

Here is a picture of the July paper pieced string block. That same green background fabric from the flying geese is the center piece on each of the 4 quadrants of this block. It was fun to make.

I had so much fun making this block for Joan. I fussy cut the flowers from the leftover fabric I used for Emerson's baby quilt. I love those funky, fun flowers!!!

I like our blocks (Joan's and mine) together. It kind of feels like two friends meeting! :) (Wish we could meet in person, Joan!!!)

Here are the blocks that are done so far from our little group. What fun it is to watch new 'friends' being slowly but surely added. :) This is going to be a quilt full of personality.

Pimento Cheese Spread

I remember going in to Grandma Wenger's home in the mornings on a summer day. She would often be listening to Kitchen Klatter on the radio (the forerunner to our food network on TV). When something struck her as interesting, she would write down a recipe they were sharing on any old scrap of paper she could find. I used to love looking through those scraps of paper. It was like a treasure hunt! :)

When I got married, one of the shower gifts she gave me was a copy of the Kitchen Klatter cookbook. I like almost everything I try from it. (I need to dig that book out again). We used to make this recipe from the cookbook and then use it to make grilled cheese sandwiches. Delicious.

Pimento Cheese Spread

1 lb American Cheese

⅓ c pimento

1½ T sugar

1 t salt

1½ T vinegar

½ c salad dressing

Grate cheese on coarse grater. Mash pimento and add to cheese with the rest of the ingredients. Add more salad dressing if necessary to make a nice spreading consistency.

I am a "Bible Marker". I write on it, underline it, highlight it, date it. I put pictorial representations of thoughts, ideas and reminders that mean something to me, but nobody else. It helps keep my attention and reminds me what impressed me as I read.

I am also a "Tech Fan". I like the computer. It is fast (and colorful)!!! It keeps my attention and I love being able to follow the rabbit trails, quickly and efficiently. If I find a rabbit I like, I stay. If not, I'm outta there!

I love to read the Bible online. I can go to a completely different spot and follow my rabbit trail before I loose the scent. (ie: forget where I was going and what i was looking for) :) But I love to mark my bible!!! It keeps me engaged and helps me remember what I need to remember. (see "Bible Marker" above)

ESV online (which is a great translation) now has a new site. I signed up (free), chose a reading plan, and now can add notes, thoughts, impressions and prayers, as well as different colored highlights and fonts (did I mention all the different colors??). All my 'worlds' collide and I am happy!!!!!

Try it. You'll like it. (At least that is what my Grandma used to say about vegetables....and now that I am an adult, I pretty much like them all!!!)

July Block - The Fussy Cut Love Bee

The Bella Modiste with The Fussy Cut Love Bee, over on flickr, asked for a liberated block to showcase her fussy cut butterflies. I started with the butterflies, that she sent already cut, and just built out from them. The block came together easily. I had read some of the comments about maybe not having quite enough fabric, and Bella Modiste said we could make smaller, or even rectangular blocks, but I really wanted to try to get 12", so I only cut when I had to.

Here's what I had leftover. Whew! I was a happy camper when this turned out like it did. :)

Something really cool happened. My cousin Selena read this recipe and gave me "the rest of the story". :)

"hi vickie! enjoy following your blog-an interesting side note about the rolls-this recipe originated with my great grandma cecil wagner(gr. ann's mother). mom submitted it to the first AC cookbook but i'm sure she probably shared the recipe with gma tillie before the book was printed. these were at every dinner at great gma wagners along with homemade jelly, chicken and homemade noodles(wish i knew how to make those), fried fish from the latest fishing trip, and i remember gooseberry pie and our favorite-chocolate cream pie! also in the AC c.book(alas you can no longer buy milk chocolate pudding around here)see you soon!"

Now that I think of it, I bet Aunt Linda (Selena's mom) probably made these and brought them. When I got the recipe, I didn't get all this info. Thanks Selena!! This makes these even more special!!!! :)

These rolls technically only take 35 minutes to make (I don't think it counts for the baking time). I have only made them a handful of times and they are quick and totally scrumptious. When I was young, my Grandma Wenger used to make these for Christmas and Easter dinner. They still keep showing up at different family functions! The fold in them is the telltale sign they are going to be buttery and satisfying. These are very light brown when done. And delicious. Very delicious. (I wonder how they would be with some whole wheat??)

1½ c milk
½ c butter
4 T sugar
1 t salt
4½ c flour
2 pkg. dry yeast
¼ c warm water

Heat milk and butter till butter melts. Add sugar, salt and ½ of the flour. Mix well. Add yeast that has been dissolved in water. Add rest of flour and beat well. Let rise 15 minutes in bowl, covered with dish cloth in warm spot. Turn onto floured board or counter and pat to ½ inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter or a drinking glass. Put a pat of butter in the center and fold over (more than half way). Let rise 15 minutes. Bake 325° for 15 minutes.

This little 6.5" block will live in a quilt with all the 6.5" paper pieced blocks made for a baby quilt for this new little guy, garrett.

I just printed off a computer enlarged 'g', traced around the back of it onto steam a seam 2, ironed it onto the background and did a yellow zig zag around the outside edge. Easy Peasy and cute as can be!

These blocks need some more 'friends' to help make Garrett's baby quilt just a bit bigger. (Since he arrived on the 4th of July, one of the girls is contemplating making an American flag. Better them than me!!!)

The Quilting Journey Round Robin bee has a side quiltalong. Our block for July is a string block. I paper pieced each quadrant on a 6.5" paper. I set my stitch length shorter, so that it was easier to take out the paper. The center pieces are leftover triangles from the flying geese block I made last month. This was a fun block to make.

This little flannel blanket should now be with the newest "Angell"! :) Little Emily lives in Portland, so her grandma, who flew in to Kansas for a visit, got to take it to her. I am jealous!!! :)

Here is a close up. I just love those fabrics! And that ribbon...you know, the orange polka dot one!! Yeah. That's the one. It sure makes my seams look like they meet perfectly! What a brilliant thing!!!

I finished my Lantern Bloom Zig Zag quilt that I started with the Old Red Barn Quiltalong late last summer and I love it. The two things I was dreading - machine quilting and hand stitching the binding - ended up being fun and even relaxing!!!

This is the first quilt I have done entirely 'by myself'!!! What fun!!

"Come Sail Away" is the cute mini quilt I made for lily.lemon. I have had a thing for flying geese and half square triangles, as well as liberated quilting. This little mini combines them both. The Neptune fabric by Tula Pink made me think of the ocean. I love red, but only wanted a touch of it on the front. This was my first mini quilt and my first swap. I had a terrific partner and another day will show you what I received from her!!! You are gonna "Love" it!!!!

Here is the back. It is OK, but next time it will be better!!! :) After doing this quilting, I learned how to use my walking foot!!

I had a simple label that was quilted in, but I didn't like it, so I paper pieced this cute sailboat and added it to the back for my label. I really like being able to use the reds, as I didn't want many of them on the front. I tried....really I did. I loooovvvve red, but they didn't 'work' on the front, except for those little touches of it in the pieced sashing.

All in all this was a great experience. I have learned soooooo much, and that is fun!!!

I have been wanting to finish this quilt, but have been dragging my feet because I wasn't sure how to do it.

But, I finally figured out how to use my walking foot and it worked great!!! :) The binding is stitched to the front and just waiting for me to hand stitch it to the back. I used that polka dot on the yummy chocolate background.
